Souvenir stores, markets or plazas all offer basically the same souvenirs but at variable prices. Downtown San Jose has two main souvenir centers. La Casona has a wild myriad of souvenirs housed in a turn-of-the-century mansion. Make sure to visit several stands before buying anything. Prices will vary. The Plaza de la Democracia souvenir market is a small, yet well-stocked market, adjacent to the Museo Nacional. This nice, open-air market caters to good people watching, so sit on a bench in the plaza and enjoy the downtown atmosphere. Make sure to keep your money in a safe place and don’t bring any valuables downtown.
Another good option is Plaza Esmeralda, a souvenir, gold and emerald depot. And learn to bargain, as Ticos will usually lower their prices.
