Disregarding the mad traffic and numerous potholes in the streets, transportation in San Jose is actually quite efficient and safe.  Public buses reach every single corner of the city. The approximate bus fare is 200 to 400 colones, depending on the route. Just be careful with pick pocketing. You also should know your way around farely well as the buses literally stop where the locals ask. So be prepared for adventure. Private bus companies heading towards the Pacific and Atlantic coasts as well major tourist destinations like the Arenal Volcano or the Cerro de la Muerte, home to the Chirripó Mountain (Costa Rica’s highest peak) are quite comfortable and reliable. Gray Line Tours offers a small bus that takes you to more than 20 destinations.

When taking a taxi, make sure the cab driver turns on the meter, commonly called the “maria.” The rate starts at 450 colones, which is approximately 1 US dollar. If the driver does not have a meter, negotiate the fare before getting in. A 10-to-15 minute driving distance should cost no more than 1500 colones. Cab drivers are usually very friendly and can be quite helpful, providing you with good traveling tips.

Quite a few rental car agencies offer varying rates, depending on the tourism season. Between December and March expect to pay anywhere between $200 to $550 US dollars per week. All rates include car insurance, which in Costa Rica might come quite in handy, considering the absence of road signs, poor road conditions and the general effusive driving style of the Ticos. A word of recommendation: drive during the day! However, with some degree of cultural tolerance, driving in Costa Rica can actually be quite fun, offering great opportunities for really seeing the country.

And when in doubt, please ask our front desk personnel for any help.
